Nagasaki Day observed annually in August is a solemn occasion that marks the devastating atomic bombing of Nagasaki in Japan by the United States during World War II in 1945. This tragic event followed the bombing of Hiroshima just three days earlier making it the second and the final time nuclear weapons were used in warfare to date. The day is marked by memorial services, peace vigils and educational programmes aimed at raising awareness about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear warfare. As this day calls for an urgent need for global nuclear disarmament and the promotion of peaceful conflict resolution strategies the Science Club Students presented an assembly on August 9th, 2024. The assembly commenced with a prayer service followed by the significance of Nagasaki Day, the historical context of World War II and the pacific theatre, events leading up to the bombing of Nagasaki, the decision-making process behind the use of an atomic bomb, long term health impacts and remembering the victims. A moment of silence was observed by the entire school community. Finally, the assembly concluded by emphasising on the importance of peace in today’s world.
